Seeing as I’ve already dedicated 8 hours to the Paradise Lost series there should be really no reason to see West of Memphis, yet the names attached, the cinematography and the Cave/Ellis score are all enough to guarantee my cinema bucks.
Side Effects looks like a fairly decent companion piece to Contagion, but I wish Soderbergh would do another Sex, Lies or The Limey or even Girlfriend Experience soon. We all know by now he can do these movies blindfolded.
As someone who has spent zero seconds studying the case I have every reason to be excited for West of Memphis; the names are just an added bonus. Hopefully this is the definitive doco on the topic.
Magic Mike was arguably a rather risque film (or so I hear) but it and Haywire sort of sat on the slash in his one for them / one for me ethos so it has been a while since we’ve gotten something truly strange from him (where is the next Bubble? And can he still make a movie without Matt Damon or the like?). I agree then that it would be nice to see him follow it up with something small and out there but at the same time Side Effects will surely deliver as Contagion and Traffic did so it’s hard to be too riled up about it. At least he hasn’t retired!
